PRESS RELEASE- from the Bethlehem PA Department of Public Works

Annual Fire Hydrant Flushing Program

As part of routine maintenance of the City’s water distribution system, we conduct hydrant flushing annually from April through October in order to flush out silt and sediment that collects in the underground piping. Homeowners, schools, and businesses in the vicinity of the flushing operation may experience temporary discoloration or cloudiness of their water. This discoloration is a result of the silt and sediment being “stirred up” in the piping. This condition usually dissipates in a few hours. The water is safe, however, we recommend customers refrain from using water to drink, cook, or wash clothes until the cloudiness dissipates. You can test the water by running cold water faucets for a few minutes at a time to see if it clears. If water does not clear within 24 hours, please call our 24 hour Water Control Center at 610-865-7077 and ask the water department to investigate the situation.

The complete hydrant flushing schedule is posted on the City web-site:http://www.bethlehem-pa.gov/index.html
